My 365 Project 2021 | Boston LGBTQ+ Photographer
Somehow this year has just flown by, and we are nearly halfway through, so I though it was time for a 365 blog post! Last year I did my first ever 365. I had always been too nervous to commit to one, but I took a photo every day from my 29th birthday to my 30, and it was easier than I expected. So this year I decided to try it again! I started on January 1st. I’m a little over a month away from the halfway mark, and it’s proving to be slightly more challenging this year. My only rules for myself are that I have to take at least one photo every day, and that the photos can’t be ones I took for a client. Here are are some of my favorite so far!
I always make sure to get a good number of landscapes every year, since I use them in a calendar for the next year. It’s a strange year for landscapes, since many of them usually come from travel and there isn’t a whole lot of traveling going on. But we’ve gone on short trips to the Berkshires, White Mountains, and Cape Cod, so here are my favorites from our minimal travel, as well as some of the gorgeous flowering trees this spring.
My cats are typically my primary subject, especially during the colder, darker months. They almost always put up with me, even when I’m shaking and tapping things to get their attention or getting right in their faces while they eat. I’ve really enjoyed playing with natural light when photographing them this year. Acadia is the always gorgeous brown tabby and Zion is the goofy orange boy.
Of course, the people in my life end up as subjects, too. They’re just not quite as willing to let me photograph them as the cats are. ;) I’ve been very limited in human subjects because of social distancing this year.
Friends’ dogs have been the subject of so many photos this year, especially my nephew dog, Guster, who lives downstairs from me. I’ve loved meeting all these furry friends, even when I can’t get close to their owners.
Having changed jobs last fall, plus not always working in-person, I don’t go to a lot of new places during the day. At my previous job, I drove all over the city to new places all the time. So instead I’ve tried to get creative within my house to make everyday items and rooms seem more exciting.
And finally, when I run out of anything else to photograph, I make a self-portrait! I try to do at least one per month to continue to help myself feel comfortable in front of the camera and challenge myself creatively. Sometimes I love them, and sometimes I wish I could change everything about them, but that’s how you learn!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this quick look at the first half of the year. I’m excited that we’re headed into summer and fall, two of my favorite season to photograph. Have questions about how to do a 365? Send me an email!
