5 Reasons to Hire a Queer Photographer | Boston LGBTQ+ Photographer

While we’ve come a long way in terms of acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community, I still run into plenty of people who are not supportive or inclusive. I don’t know about you, but I would rather surround myself with people who embrace me and lift me up instead of bringing me down. As your photographer, my goal is to do just that. Here are some of the many reasons that a queer photographer is the best photographer for you!

  1. Community Support

When you give your money to me as a queer photographer, you help me gain credibility and success to be able to serve more members of the LGBTQ+ community. Working with me directly impacts others in the queer community and the experiences they will have. I love to support LGBTQ+ owned businesses and see representation in the Boston area. (A few of my favorites include Ritcey East, Sweet Cheeks Q, and Diesel Cafe.)

2. Comfort

I take pronouns and identities seriously. I can’t tell you how many times I was referred to as “groom” on wedding paperwork when I got married, even though I was a bride. I know how that feels and I never want others to feel that way. I’ll always ask instead of assuming who you are.

3. Safety on Social Media

I will always, always, always make sure to check with you before posting your images to social media or my website. I would never want to accidentally out you before you’re ready or share your identity with family members who don’t know who you are yet. I also make sure to check in about hashtags I might use and whether you’re comfortable with them. For example, I often use trans related hashtags to show other trans folx that my business is safe for them, but if that’s not comfortable for you, I absolutely won’t do it! Your safety is more important to me than publicity.

4. Gender Neutral Posing

I work hard to make my clients feel comfortable with the poses I put them in. Many photographers have poses where “the man” goes specifically in one position and “the woman” goes in another. That’s not how I work. I use poses that make you look good and avoid unnecessarily gendering anyone. I check in throughout the session to make sure that you’re feeling okay with the way I’m posing you.

5. It’s more fun!

It makes me so happy to work with my own community and that will come out in my work, both during our session and in the end product. You all are the best. :)
