Simon's First Birthday | Boston LGBTQ+ Family Photographer

I was so excited to capture photos for Simon’s first birthday last fall in his backyard! His moms are camp friends of mine and are so wonderful, so I’m always happy to come photograph their adorable family. Simon was actually the last baby I got to hang out with before COVID and it was amazing to see how much he grew from March to November!

Simon was a little shy at first (like many babes who spent most of last year with just their immediate families), so we started with some photos of him with his moms until he got warmed up. Brenna and Jess are naturals in front of the camera. Once I got them in a spot that looked good, they tickled and snuggled Simon to get him smiling all on their own.

Backyard sessions don’t work everywhere, but there are plenty of backyards that are great for family photos! Jess and Brenna’s house back ups to some trees, rather than another house’s yard, and they had tons of fallen leaves, which were perfect to keep Simon entertained.

I love the outfits that they all chose to wear for this session. Simon is wearing gray, burgundy, and a hint of navy. Rather than matching, Jess and Brenna went for a combination of those colors so that they complimented Simon’s outfit. If you’ve read my blog post about what to wear for your photos, you know that complimentary colors are great! It makes them look like a cohesive family in the photos without having them all look exactly the same.

I don’t do a lot of cake smashes, but I occasionally capture them outside as part of first birthday sessions. Simon had this amazing Mickey Mouse cake made by Jewel of Cakes. He was hesitant to smash it at first, but with some modeling and tasting from Brenna, he got the idea and dug in. Those little cake covered fingers are the cutest!
