4 Reasons Why Engagement Photos Are Important | Boston LGBTQ+ Engagement Photographer

Have you ever wondered about why you should have engagement photos taken? I hear from a lot of couples that they’re not sure if they need them. It might seem like just one extra thing, but engagement photos are actually very important, in my opinion! I was totally an engagement session skeptic when I got engaged (I was very new to the photography industry), but I am so glad we decided to go for it and have engagement photos taken! Here are a few of the best reasons to have an engagement session!

1. It’s a chance to get out all the awkwardness.

Nearly every client I have starts out by telling me that they’re “so awkward!” I’m not joking. Almost every single one. And I was totally that person too! (I’m much better behind the camera than in front of it.) The good thing is, an engagement session gets out any awkward feelings you have, long before the wedding. My posing is mostly prompt based so that you’ll have fun and look natural in your photos, which tends to reduce awkwardness and make you feel more comfortable in front of the camera. By the time you’re done with your engagement session, you’ll feel like pros and the wedding photos will be a piece of cake.

4. It helps me get to know you!

If you’ve ever had a wedding or been in a wedding party, you know that there is very little time to stop and chat. Wedding days are busy! So if we don’t meet beforehand for engagement photos, I won’t know a lot about you, other than what I learn from our planning calls. Couples who do an engagement session are always more comfortable with me because I know what works for them and what doesn’t, and it shows in their photos. I love having the whole hour to chat with you while we work and finding out all the little details so that I can make your photos really represent you as a unique couple.

2. You’ll have photos of yourselves in something other than your wedding clothes.

Yes, your wedding outfit is probably perfect and amazing. I was obsessed with my custom wedding suit from 9Tailors. But for most of us, that’s not how we dress on a daily basis. I absolutely love having photos of my wife and me in more casual clothing because we are pretty casual people. We look more natural and the photos don’t feel so formal on the wall.

3. You can use the photos for allllll kinds of fun wedding stuff.

Engagement photos give you a lot of material to work with when focusing on the little details of your wedding. Your photos will look fantastic on your wedding website, save the dates, guestbook, favors, and more. My wife and I loved that we could use our engagement photos on our save the dates to make them really personal. And though we didn’t take advantage of it, our wedding venue, The Woodstock Inn & Brewery, makes custom beer bottles with your photo on it for your wedding. I’ve seen clients use their photos for everything from decor to temporary tattoos. Using your engagement photos really adds that personal touch to your wedding that guests love.
