What to Expect From Your Outdoor Family Photo Session | Boston Family Photographer

Whether this is your first family photo session or you’ve done this several times, every photographer is different, so you may not know what your session will be like. Though each session will be relatively unique (because your family is unique!), here’s what you can expect from a typical session with me.

  • We’ll talk by phone or email before the day of your session about your family and what specifically you’re hoping to get out of our session together. This is your opportunity to request that one shot you’re dying to capture, or to let me know that your 3 year old is shy and might need some time to warm up. I want to know about you and your family- it helps me do my job better!

  • It will last about an hour, but I’m not going to constantly be checking the clock. If we get everything we need quickly or your child is having a meltdown at the 45 minute mark, I’m not going to push to get to a full hour. And if we still want a few more shots and it’s been an hour, I’m happy to hang out a little longer to get what I need.

  • There will be some walking. There is so much variety depending on the location you choose, but most locations will require a little walking to move between the best photo spots. I’m always happy to chat about how much walking will be required at your location. I usually try to keep the amount of walking low, particularly for kids under 4 who you may end up carrying. Strollers can often be very helpful, and don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes!

  • We will start with the posed photos. Much of my work is more organic and candid, but I know that everyone needs that photo of the family looking at the camera! I like to get those mostly finished toward the beginning when the kids are ready to go. I try to get some of the whole family, as well as each parent with each child and some of each child individually. Don’t worry too much about getting your kids to smile and look at the camera. They’ll look much more natural and comfortable if we don’t force them to participate.

  • As kids start to get antsy, we’ll transition to more active and playful photos. This might include tickling, chasing each other, snuggling, and generally being silly! We’ll probably also use some natural element at your location, such as skipping rocks on a pond, throwing leaves in the air, or looking for birds in the trees.

  • Before we wrap up, I’ll ask you if we got everything you were hoping for. I always take into account anything you’ve specifically asked to capture beforehand, but sometimes you remember in the moment that there’s something you forgot you wanted. If that’s you, we’ll get those last few shots. If not, we’re done!

  • After your session, I’ll probably send you a sneak peek within a few days, because I honestly just can’t wait to share your photos with you! It’s my favorite part of the job to see your reactions your photos. You’ll get an email in about 2 weeks with a link to your gallery so you can get your downloads and prints. Don’t forget to tag me on social media when you post your pictures so I can see your favorites and your friends know who to book for their next session. ;) And the best thanks you can give me is in the form of a review on Google and Facebook!
